The Department of Art invites applications for the position of Tenure-Track, Assistant Professor/Interior Design beginning August 1, 2012. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications or experience. VSU is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
The Valdosta State University Department of Art has an enrollment of approximately 285 majors working with 18 full time faculty members. The department offers four undergraduate degree programs: BFA Interior Design, BA/BFA Art, and BFA Art Education. Valdosta State University is a regional university with a student enrollment of approximately 13,000. REQUIRED: Candidates are expected to have the following minimum required qualifications:- Terminal degree, in Interior Design or Architecture by August 1, 2012
- Record of, or capability for, conducting scholarly/creative research
- Ability to teach both lecture and studio courses in Interior Design
- Commitment to teaching lecture courses in Interior Design History and professional introductory classes as part of teaching load
- Utilize both traditional and technology based media
- NCIDQ certification or plan to become certified
- Experience in college level teaching
- Experience with CIDA accreditation
Duties include teaching undergraduate lecture and studio courses in interior design and related courses, advising students, assisting with accreditation, assessment, and other program related activities. Program areas of instruction include drafting, perspective drawing and rendering techniques, computer aided design, lighting and building systems, professional practice, residential and commercial interior design studio courses, art and interior design history, and other special topics courses as needed. Faculty members are expected to remain current in the knowledge and practice of interior design.

Responsibilities: The candidate will teach multiple sections of introductory and upper level classes as assigned in art, design, and graphic design, assist in maintaining the digital lab, advise students, work collegially with members of the university community, develop and maintain an active program of scholarship and/or creative activity, and serve the department in committee work, assessments, and accreditation reporting.

Job Summary: The Gallery Director's principal responsibilities include all phases of curating, planning, scheduling, managing, promoting, documenting, and assessing an annual series of art exhibitions including publications and ancillary programs such as lectures, panel discussions, workshops, etc. The position requires excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to work effectively, collegially, and collaboratively with others as well as to manage projects and deadlines independently, and the capacity to maintain simultaneous priorities.
Preferred Qualifications: M.A. in Art History, MFA in Visual Art, or graduate degree in any field of the visual arts, including: art history, arts management, art education, museum studies, or graduate degree in related field with substantial experience--in one or more of these areas. M.A. in Art History preferred.
Minimum 1-3 years experience in a university and/or non-profit gallery or museum setting. Knowledge of contemporary art and prior experience in a similar position is required, including a record of exhibition organization, and knowledge of and experience in producing gallery publications. Ability to work towards long-term program and institutional development and to work diplomatically with a variety of people is essential. Excellent writing, communication, and computer skills. Proficiency in a digital environment required. Ability to act as a persuasive spokesperson and liaison for the school and gallery with the public and with the city and state arts organizations. Additional teaching duties in museum studies, travel and other duties as assigned.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Gallery Director will develop a gallery exhibition program and
organize artist lectures for Johnson Hall Gallery to fulfill the
mission of the Department of Art and Jackson State University, while
engaging the Greater Jackson community. The Gallery Director will also
assist with students and alumni exhibitions that take place in the
second exhibition area, Robinson Liberal Arts Gallery. This position
will administer the permanent collection, housed separately, and make
this resource available as a teaching tool for students and the
community, while also developing future exhibition opportunities. The
director will also develop detailed procedures and formal policies
governing physical security of the venues, media interface, and the
interaction with exhibitors, visitors, and vendors. The Department

administration of the gallery budget as well as the preparation of
grant applications.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates should have an M.A., or an M.F.A. in art history, studio
arts, museum studies, art administration, or a related field. A
thorough knowledge and appreciation of art history is essential.
Experience may be substituted for education. Knowledge of handling and
installation of art objects is required. The successful candidate must
be familiar with contemporary art and criticism. The successful
candidate also must be able to work in a university environment, have
excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be able to plan
budgets, meet deadlines, provide leadership, and exhibit collegiality.

Related duties include academic advising, curriculum development, budgeting, developing and maintaining visual resources, keeping regular office hours and actively serving the university and community.
REQUIRED: Collaborative and creative generalist with strength in modern and contemporary art, effective written and oral skills and capacity to effectively inspire majors and non-majors. Ability and ambition to develop additional courses in area of research expertise with evidence of computer proficiency and significant and ongoing scholarly work are central.
PREFERRED: Versatile teacher with college teaching experience in a studio art and design environment. The university places a high priority on candidates who can contribute to the general education curriculum with core courses stressing critical thinking. Ability to offer courses in art criticism and/or theory, non-western art, visual culture, graphic design, new media, and/or film history, museum management and/or related interdisciplinary fields is highly desired. Familiarity with online curriculum development and delivery, student recruitment and retention and grant writing are also valued.
Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate studio courses in drawing, 2-dimensional design (including color theory), and other courses as needed, advising students, department and university service, and other program related activities. Faculty members with foundations teaching assignments are expected to work closely with the departmental foundations committee to assess student learning outcomes and accreditation standards. Experience with a wide variety of drawing techniques and approaches is desirable, along with a strong dedication to drawing as a contemporary art form. Faculty members are expected to remain current in the knowledge and practice in their respective studio art expertise.
