Assistant Professor - Art History

Full-time, Tenure-Track. PhD in art history or ABD with significant progress toward PhD required. Begins August 2010. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities: Teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels and oversee individualized graduate research and creative activity. Related duties include academic advising, curriculum development, budgeting, developing and maintaining visual resources, keeping regular office hours and service to the university and community.

Required: Collaborative and creative generalist with strength in modern and contemporary art, effective written and oral skills and capacity to effectively inspire majors and non-majors. Ability and ambition to develop additional courses in area of research expertise with evidence of computer proficiency and significant and ongoing scholarly work are central.

Preferred: The university places a high priority on candidates who can contribute to the general education curriculum with core courses stressing critical thinking and a common First Year Seminar and develop and deliver art criticism or theory, non-western art or visual culture courses. Training and/or experience in online teaching, grant writing and student recruitment and retention are also valued.

Assistant Professor - Art History (Modern/Contemporary)

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke seeks a tenure track, full-time art historian specializing in Modern and Contemporary Art.  The ideal candidate will have the ability to teach Native American Art, theory and criticism, and a variety of courses covering Renaissance through contemporary, including Native American, the second part of a two-semester survey and possibly art appreciation.  The successful applicant will begin fall 2010 subject to budgetary approval.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Art History required by time of appointment. For rank of associate or full professor an established publication record is required.

Responsibilities: Teach four courses each semester.  Participate in professional, departmental and university activities, including advisement and assessment.  Community activities are required for positive performance evaluations. Assist with curriculum development and long range planning working closely with the Art History Coordinator.

Department Information: The Department of Art includes 10 full-time faculty, 1 Visiting Painting Professor/Artist in Residence, and 9 adjuncts. The Department offers a Bachelor of Arts in Art (with primary areas in ceramics, digital, drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture); a Bachelors of Arts in Art Education (K-12); a Master of Arts in Art Education, and an MAT with Art Education specialization, as well as minors in Media Integration Studies and in Art History.
